How spatial data innovations are advancing the global development agenda - 2026
Users of spatial data and GIS systems come from every sector: territorial planning, conservation, public services, construction, defense, private sector markets, government administration, and more. Every summer, GIS professionals from around the world gather to share ideas and learn the latest advancements in spatial data technology at the Esri User Conference in San Diego, California. This conference is the largest and most globalized opportunity not only to learn about technological innovations in our own field, but to participate in discussions and workshops with users from other fields of study, building connections between our practice areas and the rest of the development agenda.

For sustainable development, the User Conference is the chance to observe both the thematic directions spatial data is going, and the new tools at our disposal, and begin to consider what new possibilities can be developed. At a time when development agendas are rapidly transforming and shifting with global events, the pace of spatial data technology is consistently forward, and at an advancing pace. Therefore, spatial data remains and will only become a more important and reliable tool for developing and mainstreaming decision-ready knowledge and products.
This year, GeoAdaptive’s social development geospatial associate and environmental spatial analyst spent one week learning about these thematic directions and technological advancements, sharing perspectives with professionals from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Now, our Conference attendees are in the process of integrating core directions and advancements into firmwide operations. The whole firm is workshoping top-level trends as a team, and localizing them to their specific project contexts. All spatial analysts are currently receiving training demos with the latest ArcPro updates so that all team members are capable of delivering the most advanced and accurate data products, leading to optimally informed insights and recommendations.

Three words to describe the direction of spatial data technology for territorial development are “more, made simpler.” To support this, we note three main directions:
The project workflow is increasingly centralized in ArcGIS spatial data ecosystems
“GeoAI” is streamlining large-scale tasks and building robust data environments at granular levels, but the human responsibility to train and verify remains
The spatial data ecosystem is rewarding institutions with the most expansive cross-project synergies
First, ArcGIS and QGIS have long been the standard for spatial data, merging and interplaying with the wider data analysis, computer programming, and design communities. Now, ArcGIS is rapidly improving its functionalities for integrating data sources of all kinds, and delivering quality visual and statistical products in-house, cutting down on the need for multi-platform projects and specialties. This means that while outside platforms will continue to be valuable, ArcGIS users have the most one-stop technical capacities for conducting a project from start to finish. Limiting data transfers also reduces opportunities for inconsistency or human error to enter the workflow, producing more accurate data and efficient project management pipelines.
Second, GeoAI has enormous potential to both make spatial data insights more accessible for non-technical users, and fill data and analysis gaps in remote regions. At this moment last year, GeoAI such as segment-anything models (SAM models) for highly granular satellite imagery classification were a highly complex and specialized tool; this year, it is integrated into the base ArcGIS platform with open-access satellite imagery. The possibilities of what can be extracted from imagery have opened even wider, but this only further emphasizes the need for spatial scientists that can harness it accurately and actionably. This technology offers the greatest potential benefits for highly granular applications, such as basic services deployment, urban design, and wildlife management, as well as regions with weak institutional capacities that result in data scarcity, all areas where GeoAdaptive is particularly experienced.
Third, the spatial data ecosystem is equally built for rapid assessments, narrative-driven cartographies, and institutional interactions as much as it is for long-term project planning. No matter the project type, these data ecosystems are increasingly designed to be embedded into institutional thinking and operations, with full utility achieved when artificial project barriers are broken down. The clearest example is with agentic aids and management systems, whose advancements will only be beneficial to interconnected environments with accurate protocols and metadata. But this vision is beyond any single product feature. To capitalize on this direction, our team is exploring the areas where international development trends result in new and emerging needs that overlap with the advancements in spatial data. One area of overlap we see is the need for natural assets to be mainstreamed into growth planning. Another is corridors of integration, which require a very diverse set of considerations, therefore combining data types from many sectors. Overall, it is increasingly clear that the greatest benefits in utilizing organizational data ecosystems will only be made when these systems are currently being used to their fullest multidimensional ability.

Our team is currently working on which innovations have the greatest potential and applicability to advance international territorial development. On top of the largest offerings, numerous simple features achieve economies of scale in designing and conducting geospatial workflows, as well as quality assurance pipelines, meaning that existing work can be completed more efficiently. Other simple features link spatial data to broader concepts of data science, resulting in more easily defensible and statistically informed decision making. We are advancing our use of GeoAI to cut down on technical barriers, imagery acquisition costs, and proficiency bottlenecks. Finally, we are developing ecosystem synergies to fully benefit from the power of spatial data within our data platform subscription-based offerings, which allow users the ability to explore and integrate multidimensional data for actionable decisions in real-time. Around the world, we are not only delivering results and knowledge products to clients, but embedding geospatial expertise and the latest advancements into their institutions.
We understand that these advancements are not a point in time, but rather a moment along an arrow pointing to the future. These are not actions or tasks to complete and return to when needed, but rather a mindset for innovation through which to view the frameworks of spatial data and territorial analysis. We look forward to applying and growing this mindset around the world with diverse settings, people, and needs.
